The liquid pulsates, or "jigs" up and down, causing the heavy material to work down to the bottom of the bed and the lighter material to rise to the top. Each product is then drawn off separately. Jigging is one of the oldest processes used for concentrating heavy mineral particles from the light.

Jigging is an ancient but mature coal washing technology by gravity. It has more than 110 years history since the application of air jigging machine. However, because the theoretical research of jigging coal washing technology is still wandering at the hypothesis stage, it also seriously relies on operator's experience and skill, which results into no publicly recognized and uniform jigging ...

Jigging is a densityseparation process which is widely used to separate heavier particles from the lighter ones. It is used for beneficiation of ore minerals as well as washing of coal. In its class it is by far the simplest yet a robust mechanical device that can treat comparatively larger size feed materials at higher throughputs.
Three promising paths for future research are presented: (1) using and adapting concepts from granular physics in fundamental studies about the stratification phenomena in jigs; (2) implementing advanced control functions by using machine vision and multivariate data analysis and; (3) further studies to unlock the potential of dry jigs.

The jig in its variety of forms applied in coal preparation has been a major unit in coal washeries for one hundred years; yet the principles of jigging are still less well understood than those governing many other coal preparation unit operations. Jig control has also been viewed as an art rather than a science until recently. This review considers some of the history of jigs and the ...
Abstract. This paper attempts to review the theories and mathematical models which have been advanced to explain the jigging process. The existing literature on mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis of jigging reveal that very little is known about the stratification of particles in a jig bed. It is realized that a microscopic model ...
