Bayer process Wikipedia

The Bayer process is the principal industrial means of refining bauxite to produce alumina (aluminium oxide) and was developed by Carl Josef Bayer. Bauxite, the most important ore of aluminium, contains only 3060% aluminium oxide (Al 2 O 3 ), the rest being a mixture of silica, various iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. [1]

As with the HallHéroult process for metal production, alumina production has grown steadily with minimal change to the Bayer process, driven by a steadily increasing demand for the metal, and in lesser quantities, for specialty oxides. For every tonne of primary metal, tonnes of alumina are required.

In a process described by Suss et al., and practiced at the Kamensk Uralsky alumina refinery, elemental sulfur is introduced to bauxite grinding at 24 kg/t of alumina. A sulfide ion (S 2− ) concentration of ~ g/l is achieved, leading to formation of ZnS (sphalerite) during digestion.

Bauxite is primarily comprised of aluminum oxide compounds (alumina), silica, iron oxides and titanium dioxide. Approximately 70 percent of the world's bauxite production is refined through the Bayer chemical process into alumina. Alumina is then refined into pure aluminum metal through the HallHéroult electrolytic process. Mining bauxite

Bauxite residue is the industrial solid waste discharged from the production of alumina by bauxite, which contains a certain amount of ferric oxide in a reddishbrown color, so it is also called "red mud", and is a typical nonferrous metallurgical solid waste (Wang et al. 2018; Xue et al. 2022).The varieties of bauxite residue depend on the grade of the bauxite and alumina production process.

The Bayer Process, which is used by about 80 active plants worldwide, is the primary method of producing aluminum from bauxite. Bauxite ore is dissolved in sodium hydroxide, or lye, at a high temperature and pressure. Then, the alumina and bauxite ores are separated by washing out the waste (red muds or sands) from the alumina.

In most commercial operations, alumina is extracted (refined) from bauxite by a wet chemical caustic leach process known as the Bayer process. The alumina is then smelted using the energyintensive HallHeroult process to produce aluminium metal by electrolytic reduction in a molten bath of natural or synthetic cryolite (NaAlF 6). Australia is ...

Today, aluminum is cheap and plentiful, used in everyday products ranging from soda cans to jets. The transformation of the metal from unknown material to rare metal to ubiquity in fewer than two centuries is due to two pivotal discoveries: an abundant aluminum ore — bauxite — and a process of refining this ore using electricity.
